Barnevelders

I think these Dutch chickens are very beautiful birds, with their double-laced plumage. And on top of that, they lay a dark brown egg--real dark, like those of the Marans, Penedesenca and Welsummer fowl. This is a recently developed breed. It was created just before the First World War in the search for a bird that was a good layer of dark brown eggs. Barnevelders are also found in White, Black and Blue-laced varieties.

Show-quality Barnevelders don't lay as dark an egg as the utility birds. There's a picture below of eggs from a show-quality flock. Utility birds lay an egg more like the ones pictured on my Marans page.
