This breed probably originated in Hungary some 300 years ago as an ordinary farmyard chicken. It is an all-purpose breed: a good all-season layer, lean for stews and soup, firm-fleshed and they make good mothers.
The eggs are light brown, many having interesting patterns of darker red-brown splashes, bands and speckles.
All the birds I know of in the Americas are in Canada.
