California Quail range through the grasslands and shrublands of western North America, from Baja California north to Oregon. They have been introduced in various places as far apart as New Zealand and Chile and are also fairly common in captivity.
The females have shorter, browner crests and their heads are blackish-brown without the bold pattern found on the males. Clutches can be as large as 14 eggs and are incubated for 21-23 days. They are best reared by the parents.
Their call is said to sound like chi-ca-go, chi-ca-go.
