Blue Scale Quail
Callipepla squamata
A poor picture of Blue Scales at a sale
These quail are found in arid areas from Colorado and Kansas as far south as central Mexico. Plumage is similar between the sexes, but the hen has dusky markings on her throat and her crest is buff, not white, and shorter than that of the male.
They are quite prolific and may produce more than 60 eggs in a season. The chicks do best with some soft-bodied live food added to their diet.
