This is an old breed from Bulgaria, although in the mid-Twentieth century some Minorca and Rhode Island Red blood was crossed in, probably to save the breed. It is only kept by a few breeders now, as well as the Poultry Institute in Bulgaria.
It only comes in Black. The hens produce 150-160 white eggs per year. Skin color is white, ear lobes are red. This is an early maturing breed, with roosters reaching 4.4 lb (2 kg) and hens 3.3 lb (1.5 kg).
