This duck is found in central and southern Africa. It prefers moving water in wooded hill country.
The sexes are similar in plumage, but when seen in pairs, the males are distinctly larger than the females. Clutch size ranges from 4 to 8 eggs and incubation is 28 days. Nests are placed on the ground, well hidden and very close to running water.
