These large sea-ducks are found in coastal waters throughout much of the Arctic and Sub-arctic. In the New World they get as far south as Maine and southern Alaska, and in the Old World, south to the British Isles and Germany.

Very sociable birds, they are found in large flock yearround.

Eiderdown was collected from the linings of nests, but it has been mostly supplanted by synthetics.
