There are two races of Crestless Firebacks, the Malay (L. e. erythrophthalma) and the Bornean (L. e. pyronota). They inhabit the low jungles of Sumatra, Malaysia and Borneo.

The Malay Crestless is the more common in captivity. Crestless Firebacks get their adult plumage in the first year, but do not breed until the second. 3-6 eggs are laid and the female sits for 23-24 days.

They require supplemental heat in winter.
