Mixed Breeds
On this page I'm placing images of various mixed breed chickens that I find particularly attractive. Some of the most beautiful chickens I've known have been "mutts."
"Marzipan." His mother was a Lakenvelder
"Tourist" got his name from his habit of flying over the fence and exploring the neighborhood. I really love the colors on this bird
"Kit" (6/28/87--7/13/02) was one of my favorite hens. Her mother was a Golden
Phoenix hen "Naranjo," an orange rooster for the BatLady "PewterBird" was one of my very first mixed-breed barnyard
bantams and one of the prettiest hens I've ever had "John Doe," A Black Rosecomb bantam and Red Junglefowl cross "Neon John" is "John Doe's" full brother. You can see how a
cross between the same pair of birds (of different breeds) can produce offspring with
very different features And their half-brother "Sir John," who had the same Red Junglefowl father
but a different mother, a Golden Phoenix hen "Thrushette's" mother was a Golden
Sebright bantam "Kinglet," another Golden Sebright mix A Blue Cochin bantam cross, "BellBird" resembles his mother
in coloration only A mixed breed frizzled pullet, "Leticia"
I don't know "Glo's" heritage. I picked her up at an auction
because I really liked her laced pattern "Gary Gray's" mother was an Ameraucana bantam, father unknown
"Boring" My pal "Blue Jim"

OK, so Boring isn't a pretty hen. In fact, she was down right boring to look at, and got
her name by the time she was 3 months old. But she developed more personality than Johnny
Carson and I needed a place to put her story.

Blue Jim lived in the Juniper tree outside my door since 1986. His mother
was my old Golden Phoenix hen "Yukako." He hatched out on
May 3, 1986 and passed away at the ripe old age of 11 years and 3 months on August 6, 1997.
I'll miss him greeting me at the door every morning. Here's a 572K movie
of Blue Jim crowing
